    Press release for immediate release

NeuroMotrix offers adapted physical activity sessions by videoconference: a solution to maintain physical capacities and break the isolation of seniors.

Montreal, October 29, 2020 – As Quebec faces a second wave, it is important to react now so as not to relive the dramatic consequences of the first wave on seniors. Studies have, in fact, shown a significant decrease in physical activity in the elderly during confinement, a 34% reduction in the time spent walking and other forms of physical activity. In a population which is reputed to have a high rate of sedentary lifestyle, this is catastrophic. The consequences on their state of health are undeniable: loss of muscle strength, increased risk of falls, cognitive decline, depression, etc. A gesture as simple as getting up from a chair can become very difficult to do and can lead to significant loss autonomy.

There are solutions to fix it. As healthcare professionals, NeuroMotrix is involved in the quality of life of the elderly population. Since March 2020, NeuroMotrix has adapted in order to continue to get people moving despite the sanitary measures imposed by public health. The company, founded in 2015, made up of experienced kinesiologists specializing in aging and neurological disorders, has opened online training sessions. Their clients applauded this initiative, which allowed them to continue to practice physical activity, despite the pandemic context, in the safety and comfort of their home. This required technological support from certain customers, but the transition was effectively ensured. A survey was carried out among its participants in July to analyze the appreciation of this new activity implemented. The results speak for themselves: over 40% of participants engage in more physical activity than before confinement. The ease of access to videoconferences allowed them to be more diligent in their exercise practice. The online sessions are interactive and facilitate the creation of social connections, which are very important in breaking down isolation. The Zoom sessions, open fifteen minutes before the start, give them the opportunity to interact with each other and speak with a kinesiologist every day of the week.

More than ever, these services are essential. This is why NeuroMotrix has strengthened its online offer to allow the elderly to continue to move in a 100% safe environment. Seven physical activity sessions are now offered, each week, with an unlimited subscription plan, which allows participants to join as many sessions as they wish. NeuroMotrix also offers the possibility of following individual sessions online, via the Zoom platform.

Physical activity is recognized as an effective way to maintain physical and mental health. Physical activity must be adapted to everyone’s condition and introduced safely and gradually. The expertise of NeuroMotrix kinesiologists, who have been working daily for five years with people whose health is impaired, and their experience of remote intervention since the start of this pandemic, are elements that guarantee safe care.
