Home training equipment: advice from a kinesiologist

1. Use everyday items for home sessions with your kinesiologist

Some people think that it takes a lot of equipment to start physical activity sessions at home, with your kinesiologist in person, or our group sessions by videoconference. It may even be a barrier to physical activity for some people. In reality, our home sessions do not require much equipment. We favor the use of everyday items which you do not even suspect the dual function they may have. You will see them differently.

  • Use cans or water bottles to replace dumbbells! The only important thing is to have two objects of the same weight on each side of your body so that both sides are strained equally.
  • Use a dictionary or a big book to replace a yoga block. Such a block can be used for coordination exercises or for raising a leg during certain movements.
  • Use a towel or belt as a strap to guide certain exercises and stretches.
  • Get out your tennis balls or stress balls which can be useful for coordination and speed exercises. You could even replace such a ball with an orange!
  • Use an upright chair without a castor, such as a kitchen table chair, for your workouts whether you are doing seated exercises or doing standing exercises with support.
  • Use a strap, belt, or towel in your physical activity sessions. Who would’ve believed that? Our kinesiologists are very creative when designing tailor-made programs. Their goal is to diversify your exercises in order to solicit many parts of your body, while taking pleasure in moving.

One thing to remember: speak with your kinesiologist first before making any purchase. You will be able to list together the equipment you will need for an effective training.

2. Adapt your space for your home kinesiology sessions

In addition to the equipment, it is important to put in place safe measures in your home for your home kinesiology sessions. Living there is one thing. Getting physically active there is another.

As a first step, wearing adequate and comfortable clothing is recommended as if you were training indoors. Likewise, your shoes should be comfortable and safe. There is a tendency to forget these simple basic guidelines that make sure you have a safe physical activity session at home.

Securing your space is also very important. You need to make sure that objects are at least 1.5 meters (5 feet away) so that you don’t trip over things lying around on the ground. Sometimes focused on the movement you are doing, you forget the rest. The kinesiologist will be able to check with you the clearance of your space before starting the session as such when he comes to your home. By videoconference, don’t forget to check everything before connecting with us.

This recommendation also applies to your pet. Cat or dog might indeed want a hug during your session. So remember to isolate them in another room of the house during your session with your home kinesiologist or during your session by videoconference .
